Shurhi Meyase from Nagaland

Dear Friends,

In the coming months, Christian leaders from South Asia will be sharing prayer requests with the Scholar Leaders Prayer Community. Scholar Leaders has collaborated with six seminaries and supported 56 scholars from this region. Learn more about three South Asian countries – Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka – where members of our Fellowship live and serve.

This week, please join us in prayer for Shurhi Meyase from Nagaland, India.
Along with Meghalaya and Mizoram, Nagaland is one of three Indian states – all in the Northeast – with a Christian majority. Around 88% of Nagaland’s 2 million people follow Jesus. In contrast, only 2% of India’s 1.38 billion people identify as Christians, while 80% practice Hinduism. In 1872, newly baptized Naga believers and American Baptist missionaries planted the first church in Nagaland. Over the next century, the state became predominantly Christian after evangelical revival movements swept through the region in the 1950s and 60s. Pray for the Church in Nagaland as it participates faithfully in Christ’s ministry of reconciliation among 16 minority tribes speaking 36 languages.

Shurhi is pursuing a PhD in Intercultural Studies at the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies (UK). Her research investigates how Christian and traditional Angami Naga moralities converge and diverge. Amid a revival of tribal festivals and practices in her context, Shurhi’s scholarship will guide the Naga Church’s perspective and response. Shurhi’s studies will also enhance her teaching ministry at Shalom Bible Seminary, where she has served as Assistant Professor since 2011. In addition to supporting Shurhi’s doctoral studies through Leader Studies, Scholar Leaders has collaborated with Shalom Bible Seminary through the Vital Sustainability Initiative
Shurhi shares the following message:

Dear Scholar Leaders Family,

Thank you for the opportunity to share my prayer concerns. I am Shürhisieü (Shurhi) Meyase from Nagaland, India. I am a faculty member of Shalom Bible Seminary in Kohima, Nagaland.

Presently, I am doing my PhD at OCMS (Oxford Centre for Mission Studies), Oxford. My research is on how the Angami Nagas interface their understandings of traditional morality and Christian morality. I am ever humbled and grateful for the financial support and the spiritual and moral encouragement I receive from SL.

Prayer Requests

1. Please pray for the faculty, staff, and students of Shalom Bible Seminary. Pray that each faculty and staff member will teach and live as role models in fulfilling their responsibilities. Please pray for the students as they come to the seminary to train and equip themselves to fulfil God’s call for ministry.

The seminary experienced several spiritual attacks and sicknesses in the past year. Despite all the challenges, God gave us his grace, power, and strength to walk through the trials. Please pray that the work of the Lord will continue to advance and that the enemy will be bound.

2. Please pray for the ongoing projects of Shalom Bible Seminary. One major project is the ongoing construction of the library and research centre. Up to this point, God has been faithful in providing for the institution’s needs. Trusting in God’s provision, the seminary started this project in faith. Pray that the Lord will provide all that is needed for completing the building project. Pray that more churches, well-wishers, and individuals will partner with us and become active supporters as the Lord enables them.

3. Please pray for me as I work toward the completion of my studies.
