Known for its rich biodiversity and multicultural society, the tropical nation of Malaysia consists of West and East Malaysia (also known as Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo), separated by the South China Sea. Around 50% of Malaysia’s nearly 33 million people are ethnic Malay, while 23% are Chinese and 7% Indian. 61% of Malaysians practice Islam, 20% Buddhism, 9% Christianity, and 6% Hindusm. Although Islam is the state religion of Malaysia, the constitution does grant freedom of religion and conscience. Nevertheless, the country has experienced increasing intolerance over the past decade.
| A fulltime faculty member at the Bible College of Malaysia, Eva is currently pursuing a PhD in Pentecostalism at the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies in the UK. Her dissertation is entitled, “’From a Classical Pentecostal Movement to a Contemporary Pentecostal Church Movement: A Study of the Assemblies of God of Malaysia with Special Reference to Joel 2:28-32.” Through her research, Eva seeks to understand the development, over six decades, of Pentecostal theology and practice in the Assemblies of God of Malaysia. Eva and her husband Philip have two children: Clarissa (16) and Trevor (12). Eva shares the following message: |
| Warmest greetings. I am a fulltime faculty member and the Spiritual Formation Director at the Bible College of Malaysia, the national Bible college of the Assemblies of God of Malaysia. I have also been a licensed minister since 2015. I am currently in my fifth year of PhD studies at the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies (OCMS) in the United Kingdom. My research examines the extent to which the practice of the Assemblies of God of Malaysia has changed, with respect to its espoused Pentecostal Theology, since its inception in 1957 to the present day. Prayer Requests I really appreciate this opportunity to share my prayer requests. Please uphold us concerning the following: 1) Thanksgiving to God for His blessings and providence. 2) Bible College of Malaysia (BCM) and other theological seminaries, that they might progress and thrive in our nation, where Christianity is only around 9% of population. BCM celebrates her 60th anniversary this year. 3) The government of Malaysia, that it would uphold righteousness, transparency, truth, and justice in every aspect in our multi-racial and multi-religious nation. 4) Greater unity among all Christian denominations and churches, that we might advance the Gospel in our land. 5) God’s wisdom for smooth progress in my final stage of writing my PhD dissertation toward successful completion in due course. 6) God’s guidance in fulltime ministry. 7) The well-being of my family and elderly parents.
