David Muthukumar in India

Dear Friends,

This week, please pray with us for Dr. David Muthukumar in India.

India has a rich and ancient Christian heritage. According to tradition, the Apostle Thomas planted the first Indian church in modern-day Kerala, along the subcontinent’s southwestern coast in 52 AD. Today, India’s Christians number 28 million and live primarily in the country’s northeastern and southern states. According to a 2011 census, India’s 1.38 billion-strong population is 80% Hindu, 14% Muslim, 2% Christian, 2% Sikh, and 1% Buddhist. In recent years, the Hindu nationalist (Hindutva) agenda of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has threatened the democracy’s religious freedoms, emboldening violence against Muslims, Christians, and other religious minorities.

David is Head of the Christian Theology Department, Dean of Doctoral Studies, and Associate Professor of Theology at the South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies (SAIACS), a partner school of the Vital Sustainability Initiative. David earned his PhD in Systematic Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, with support from Scholar Leaders through Leader Studies and the Brian Prinn Memorial Fund. In his dissertation, David distinguishes Christ from the many deities worshiped across the Indian subcontinent. Through his scholarship and teaching, he promotes interreligious understanding and equips Christians to reach their Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh neighbors more effectively with the Gospel. David and his wife Catherine have two grown sons, Nehem and Tim.
David shares the following message:

I am happy to share that I am continuing my fourth year of teaching at the South Asia Institute of Christian Studies (SAIACS) in Bangalore, India, as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Christian Theology. I also serve as the Dean of Doctoral Studies.
I am grateful to God for his mercies and sustaining graces toward my family. I also want to express my deep gratitude to SL and the Prinn family for your generous support toward my PhD studies at Fuller Theological Seminary.
Currently, my wife Catherine and I are staying on the SAIACS campus. Our elder son, Nehem, is pursuing his first year of law school at Emory University in Georgia, while our younger son, Timmy, is a sophomore at Calvin University in Michigan.
Prayer Requests
1. Please pray that I will faithfully fulfill my responsibilities at SAIACS for God’s glory and the benefit of God’s people.
2. Please pray for my family, especially for the education of my two sons.
3. Pray for India as we enter the election season. India is on the verge of becoming a Hindutva theocracy as we face serious challenges to the secular, democratic, and constitutional structure of our government.
4. Pray for persecuted minorities in India, as Christians and Muslims are increasingly under government scrutiny and discriminatory policies.
5. Pray for the churches, mission agencies, and theological institutions in India to faithfully testify to the power of the gospel in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
With regards and prayers,
David Muthukumar
