Hailu Cherenet Biru became a leader in the Meserete Kristos denomination when Communists ruled Ethiopia. During that time, Hailu and other Christian leaders were often imprisoned for their beliefs. Despite official disapproval and persecution, the Church grew. Hailu’s denomination has increased from 5,000 to more than 50,000 members. After the fall of Communism, Hailu joined other pastors to found the Meserete Kristos College, where he then served as Instructor, Academic Dean, and President. Hailu earned his PhD in Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. His dissertation focused on a proper theology of work to help combat economic challenges in Ethiopia. Hailu and his wife Yeshi have four children.
